Suspects at large after robbing KZN service station

A case of business robbery is under investigation after an armed gang stormed into the Southgate service station in KwaZulu-Natal, blew up two-drop safes and made off with an undisclosed amount of money earlier today.

Service station manager Mark Hardman told South Coast Sun: “At about 2am, eight men arrived at the premises. Four entered the convenience store, and four remained outside. Four staff members were inside and eight in the forecourt area. A security guard who was in the toilet noticed the commotion and pressed the panic button,”  reported.

“However, the service station’s security company was unable to get through on the landline. By that time, two of the robbers had ordered staff inside to lie on the floor in the kitchen area. Explosives were used to blow up the drop safes and remove the cash,” added Hardman.

“Due to the damage caused, the service station is closed, but it will re-open in the next two days,” said Hardman.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle. No shots were fired, no injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made.

Last Thursday CCTV footage emerged showing robbers storming into the Engen garage next to Trade Route Mall in Lenasia, in the south of Johannesburg.

In the video, captured at about 1am, a white Fiat bakkie can be seen pulling up next to the petrol pump and the driver instructing the petrol attendant to fill the bakkie with R300 petrol.

“While the attendant was filling the tank, a man exited the bakkie from the passenger door carrying a rifle and ran to the shop. Two petrol attendants and a motorist who had seen the man run into the shop scattered away in different directions,” said the petrol station manager, Hajra Khan.
