Suspects bomb cash-in-transit vehicle on Durban N3

Emergency teams rush to the scene near Sherwood after an afternoon blast leaves a vehicle engulfed in flames.

The N3 westbound near Sherwood was closed yesterday afternoon (July 18) after a cash-in-transit vehicle was bombed, causing major traffic disruptions, reports Berea Mail.

The blast occurred just before 17:00, leaving the vehicle engulfed in flames atop the Sherwood bridge.

ALS Paramedics arrived shortly after to find the van smouldering. Their teams immediately began treating two security guards for minor injuries while providing assistance to several bystanders who had been caught in the aftermath.

A police officer who was also present on the scene required urgent medical intervention and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

Freeway closed as suspects flee

In the wake of the explosion, SAPS, Durban Metro and Homeland Security personnel swarmed the area to secure the site and launch a forensic investigation. With the suspects having successfully fled the scene and remaining at large, authorities shut down the freeway in both directions.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area while recovery operations continued and investigators combed the scorched bridge for evidence.
