Taxi owner shot dead in Kempton Park

A 30-year-old man believed to be a taxi owner has been shot dead on Pomona Road in Kempton Park, on the East Rand.

Police said Themba Zungu was travelling with his brother when he was shot and killed in his silver VW Polo by suspects who had allegedly followed him in a white Mercedez Benz AMG with blue lights on Monday afternoon, Kempton Express reported.

Zungu was declared dead on the scene by paramedics after two bullets were fired into his chest at about 4.30pm, added police.

Kempton police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali said two bags were stolen from the deceased’s car.

“The victim was apparently driving along Pomona Road, coming from the R21 direction, when he made a U-turn. He was allegedly being followed by the Merc, which stopped the victim just after he had made the U-turn,” added Mtshali.

“One of three suspects in the Mercedes jumped out of the car and fired two shots into the deceased’s chest, fatally wounding him,” said Mtshali.

Zungu’s brother, who asked to remain anonymous, said they were both taxi owners and had come from OR Tambo International Airport to withdraw MONEY.

Zungu`s brother said the suspects pulled up next to them, and one man got out the car. Apparently all he said to the victim was, ‘I know you. I know you,’ and then shot him.

The suspects sped off in the Mercedes with two bags, witnesses said.

No arrests have been made, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward by calling the crime line on 08600 10111 or sending an SMS to 32211.

Last month, a 53-year-old man was shot dead and a police officer wounded in Tembisa, Gauteng.

Gauteng police spokesperson Katlego Mogale told The Citizen the unidentified man was at the taxi rank when a white vehicle stopped and opened fire at about 11am.

“A police officer and a bystander were wounded as the suspects fired shots at police”, said Mogale.

No arrests had been made.
