Taxi violence murders: 3 arrested in Midrand and East London
Law enforcement officers have arrested three suspects in connection with the murders of two taxi owners, a taxi driver and a member of a taxi association.
Three suspects linked to taxi violence-related murders in East London were arrested by a special task team assigned to prevent, combat and investigate serious and violent crime in the Eastern Cape and Midrand.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says the murders are believed to have taken place between November 2023 and August 2024.
“Two taxi owners, a taxi driver and a member of a taxi association were gunned down,” she adds.
Two of the suspects were arrested at Mall of Africa in Midrand on Friday, while another was arrested in East London on Saturday.
A video emerged on social media showing law enforcement officials arrest several suspects, including the two people at the mall.
Four other suspects, who are also seen in the video, have been taken in for questioning by the police.
“Police have seized four pistols and an AK47 from the suspects,” says Mathe. “These firearms and [the] rifle have been taken in for ballistics testing to determine their linkage to the murders and any other serious and violent crime.”
This matter is still under investigation and police will not comment further.
