Tech employed to excorcise Mpuma ‘ghost employees’

MEC of Finance in Mpumalanga, Sikhumbuzo Kholwane, has announced his department’s plans to roll out a biometric-online fingerprint verification system for government employees.

This is to eradicate the existence of ghost employees on the payroll. Kholwane announced during his recent budget speech that the project would be rolled out in the provincial departments of public works, health and education, Lowvelder reported.

“It is no longer sufficient that the provincial treasury only ensures financial liquidity and timeous payments of salaries to employees,” Kholwane said.

He added that head count was necessary but inadequate and that the project was to be extended to public entities too.“We will continue to ensure that there are no ghost employees in the provincial administration.”

Increasing the exploration of alternative funding mechanisms to address Mpumalanga’s social and economic challenges would also be undertaken, he said.

“We can no longer continue to rely only on provincial fiscus to address the myriad of social and economic challenges. We will continue to identify and facilitate registration of possible projects that meet the criteria for public private partnership with the National Treasury and the exploration of alternative funding mechanisms,” he said.
