Teen drowns in defunct mine near eMalahleni
Likazi community shaken by tragic drowning of teen in alleged un-rehabilitated mine, sparking questions about safety and negligence.

A devastating start to the year has shaken the community of Likazi Ward 14, eMalahleni, as a promising young life was tragically lost in a drowning incident.
Witbank News reports a teen’s life was claimed by the murky waters of an alleged un-rehabilitated mine, leaving family, friends, and the community in shock and grief.
The tragic events unfolded earlier this week when three boys went swimming. His friends said he slipped and never resurfaced.
The agonising wait for rescue efforts ended yesterday, when SAPS and a diving team arrived. The boy’s lifeless body was retrieved and declared dead at the scene.
EFF PR councillor Maushe Collen summed up the tragedy, saying: “Rehabilitation was not done at this mine. This tragedy could have been avoided. The community is now left to grapple with the painful reality of a young life lost, and the haunting question of what could have been done to prevent this senseless tragedy.”
