Ten arrested in Gauteng during illegal mining crackdown

Ten suspects were arrested after a multi-agency police operation in Khutsong and Carletonville uncovered unlicensed firearms, ammunition and suspected precious metals.

Ten suspects were arrested for the alleged possession of precious metals, firearms and ammunition yesterday (June 7) in Khutsong and Carletonville, west of Johannesburg.

Law enforcement officials, consisting of Gauteng Crime Intelligence, the West Rand District Task Team, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, followed up on intelligence information, which led them to an address in Khutsong, where they arrested three men suspected to be illegal immigrants, reports Carletonville Herald.

One of them allegedly had an unlicensed 9mm firearm with ammunition. The suspects led the team to another address in Carletonville believed to be that of the kingpin.

On arrival at the second address, they found seven men, including the alleged kingpin, who was also found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition and precious metals.

All ten suspects will be charged with contravention of the Immigration Act and be verified by the Department of Home Affairs.

Two of the suspects will face additional charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of precious metals, and are expected to appear in court tomorrow (June 9).
