Three foreign nationals arrested in brothel raid

Three foreign nationals accused of running a brothel in Brooklyn, in the east of Pretoria, will appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Friday following their arrest.

Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said all three, a man and two women, were scheduled to apply for bail. They were arrested in a raid last Wednesday, Rekord East reported.

Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the man was believed to have been the owner of the brothel, while the two women were apparently responsible for recruiting staff.

During the raid, police seized tablets suspected to be drugs, which had been taken for testing, receipt books and suspected fake passports, which were being verified.

In March, two Ugandan nationals aged between 24 and 27 were arrested on suspicion of managing a brothel in a block of flats in the Bloemfontein central business district (CBD).

Police were made aware of the suspected brothel by a whistleblower, who claimed to know of seven girls forcibly detained in a flat as sex workers.

An operation was planned and executed, which led to the speedy rescue of the seven students aged between 18 and 20 from North West and Bloemfontein, police said.

Members of the Hawks also seized drugs, including methcathinone (cat) and crack cocaine, found hidden in the bottom of a kettle, valued at R5 000, as well as pornographic material, added police.

The seven girls were taken to a place of safety, where they received counselling and other treatment.
