Three police officers die in horror accident in Vereeniging

A truck allegedly dragged their vehicle almost 500m before coming to a halt.

Three SAPS members have lost their lives after their vehicle was hit by a truck early this morning. The incident happened around 05:30 at the four-way stop where Boy Louw and Carbon roads cross in Vereeniging.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Shaan Motsapi says that the deceased members were on duty when the incident happened.

“Members were on their way from Sharpeville to Steelpark when the police van they were traveling in was hit by a truck.

Motsapi alleges that the truck failed to stop at the intersection. After hitting the police vehicle, it was allegedly dragged for about 500m before the truck came to a halt.

All three members were declared dead on the scene.

Motsapi says they are investigating cases of culpable homicide and negligent and reckless driving.

Vereeniging Station Commander Brigadier Sibongile Ndaba says she is devastated by the incident.

“Today we are grieving three officers who lost their lives serving and protecting the community.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident. I would like to convey my deepest condolences to the families.”
