Three women gunned down, children injured in Umlazi near Durban

It is unclear why the women were murdered, and police are appealing to anyone that has information to contact them.

Three women were shot and killed after a man entered their house and fired shots at them earlier this week. Two children, the eldest aged five, were also injured in the process.

Bhekithemba SAPS are currently investigating charges of murder and attempted murder.

Provincial police spokeswoman, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, says that police will leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Gwala says “It is alleged that a suspect entered a premises at an informal settlement at Umlazi L section and fired shots at three women, who were believed to be in their 30s and 40s.

“The women were all declared dead at the scene. Two children, aged five and six-months-old, sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for medical attention.”

KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza, expressed shock and utter disgust over the brutal killing of the women.

“It is very hard to comprehend that innocent and defenceless women can be brutally killed like this. Such barbaric acts should be condemned by all peace-loving people in our society.

The killing of women sets us backward as a nation. It is important that we reflect how morals had undergone a radical decline to an extent that people could murder women and children. It pains us that we continue to experience such incidents,” she says.

A team of social workers have been assigned to provide psycho-social support to the affected family.

The motive behind the shooting is not known at this stage. Police are calling on those, who may have witnessed the incident to come forward by contacting the Crime Stop Hotline on 08600-10111. Alternatively, you can download the MySAPS App on all Android phones. Anonymity is guaranteed.
