Tip-off leads to an arrest of alleged hijacker

A tip-off has led police to the arrest of a suspect in Ivory Park Extension 2, east of Johannesburg.

Ivory Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said police officers from the Gauteng provincial police received a tip-off about suspicious activity at a Tata truck that had been parked in the street on Tuesday, Midrand Reporter reported.

Sekgobela added: “Police went to the scene to investigate the truck and they found that the vehicle had been linked to a robbery case in Secunda at the beginning of January.”

Unaware police were on to him, the suspect (30) arrived at the scene driving a white Ford Laser and parked next to the truck. He was arrested while getting into the truck, said Sekgobela.

“Police also found that the Ford Laser had been reported stolen in Bronkhorstspruit. A 9mm pistol with the number filed off was also confiscated from the suspect,” added Sekgobela.

On Monday, two suspects aged 26 and 31 were arrested for allegedly robbing a business and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in KwaMashu, Durban.

It was alleged the unidentified victim was at his tuck shop in J section, KwaMashu, when he was approached by three suspects at gunpoint.

They threatened him with a firearm and took an undisclosed amount of cash and airtime vouchers before they fled the scene on foot.
