Traffic law enforcer fatally hit near N4 Middelburg Toll Plaza
A Mpumalanga traffic officer was killed on duty after a light delivery vehicle reportedly failed to stop, sparking an investigation.
A Mpumalanga traffic law enforcer was killed at about 00:05 at the weighbridge near the N4 Middelburg Toll Plaza, on the Middelburg side.
Middelburg Observer reports that, according to Mpumalanga Community Safety and Security Liaison head of communication Moeti Mmusi, the 49-year-old officer was attempting to stop a light delivery vehicle (LDV) at the weighbridge when the incident occurred. He died on the scene.
“We are deeply saddened by this and appeal to motorists to approach areas where traffic officials are working with caution, and to look out for traffic officials.”
When police arrived, they found three passengers in the LDV, who reported that the driver had fled the scene.
A culpable homicide case is being investigated at this stage.
Officer identified
The officer has been identified as Joseph Ntsei, a principal provincial inspector attached to Overload Control in Middelburg.
According to a statement from the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, Ntsei was on duty directing an LDV towing a trailer to the weighbridge when the vehicle reportedly failed to stop and struck him.
Macie expressed condolences to Ntsei’s family, friends and colleagues and urged law enforcement to locate the driver.
