Two foreign nationals found with R3 million in stolen goods
Two foreign nationals have been arrested after stolen goods worth an estimated R3 million were recovered from storage units at a property in Benoni, on Gauteng’s East Rand.
The men, aged 34 and 36, were arrested at the property as they were offloading the stolen items.
“The two foreign national suspects were asked to open the doors of their vehicle, as the Metro police wanted to search it,” said Maritz.
Approximately 300 cases of Red Bull energy drinks were found inside the vehicle, and the suspects reportedly could not explain why the cases were in their possession.
“One storage unit was packed with Red Bull, one with sugar, dried fruit and biscuits, and one with printer cartridges,” Maritz added.
It was later discovered all of the goods had been stolen in three separate incidents that took place between January 7 and 11.
One of the suspects was arrested with R32 000 cash on him, and both men will be charged with being in possession of stolen goods.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates’ Court soon.
Last year, Western Cape police seized counterfeit goods valued at around R3 million and illicit cigarettes worth about R470 000 during an interprovincial cross-border operation.
The six-day operation resulted in the arrests of 117 people for various offences, including drug possession and house robbery.
