Two injured after police vehicle collided with motorbike
Two people have been injured after a motorbike and a police vehicle collided in Lewisham, Krugersdorp, on the West Rand.
The police vehicle is reportedly part of the West Rand Flying Squad and was driving along Main Reef towards the CBD yesterday when the driver of the motorbike, driving in the opposite direction, made a right turn on to Station Street, and the police vehicle crashed into him, Krugersdorp Newsreported.
Members of the West Rand Flying Squad and Mogale City Public Safety responded to the scene and found the wreckage of the motorbike, with the police vehicle dented on its front left side.
ER24 took the motorcyclist to a nearby hospital, and the driver of the police vehicle was attended to by a Netcare 911 paramedic.
Afternoon traffic came to a halt following the accident on the corner of Main Reef Road and Station Street.
Another bystander, who is also a motorcycle driver, said he saddened when he saw the scooter in pieces next to the road.
“When you ride a scooter or motorcycle, you need to be extra careful. I’m just glad the young man is alive,” he added.
In a separate incident, a policeman was killed and another injured when their car collided with a truck near Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal.
Warrant Officers Siyabonga Mncwango, 45, and Bhekizitha Moses Dube, 43, were on duty travelling in a state vehicle on the R616 between Ladysmith and Bergville in January when they collided with the truck, said provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker.
The truck allegedly veered into the path of the officers’ car, and they collided head-on.
Dube died on the scene. Mncwango sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital, along with the truck driver, Naicker added.
