Two in custody for murder of Tshwane firefighter

One of the suspects is the estranged son-in-law of the victim and the other the suspected hitman.

Two men suspected of the murder of a 59-year-old Tshwane firefighter, have been remanded in custody after appearing in the Bronkhorstspruit magistrate’s court on Monday.

Senile Annah Mnguni (59) was gunned down outside her workplace in February. The men believed to be responsible for her death were arrested outside Pretoria last week Friday.

The two suspects are the victim’s estranged son-in-law Frans Letshoalo (51), who is a taxi boss, and the alleged hitman, Sizwe Nhlapho (28).

They are being investigated by the Hawks’ serious organised crime investigation, according to Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo.

Nxumalo says the duo were arrested after the Hawks, Crime Against the State (CATS) and Tactical Operational Management Section (TOMS) as well as Head Office Crime Intelligence traced and found the accused at their places of residence in Krugersdorp and Soweto.

“The motive for the killing is still under investigation,” she says.

At 20:10 on February 16, Mnguni was found shot several times, dressed in her Tshwane Fire Department uniform on Kommando Street.

It is alleged that between four and five gunshots were heard, and she sustained injuries to the head.

According to fellow firefighters, Mnguni went out to meet an unknown person she had just spoken to on the phone.

They then heard gunshots moments after she had left the station.

Her colleagues went outside to look for her and her body was found about 100 metres from the station with multiple gunshot wounds.

A paramedic certified her dead on the scene.

Letshoalo and Nhlapho will remain in custody until their next court appearance on Friday for a formal bail application.
