Two road workers killed after truck loses control on N3 in KZN
Two road workers died on Saturday after a truck lost control on the N3 near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza and crashed into a roadside construction team.
Two road workers were killed on Saturday morning when a truck lost control on the N3 Durban-bound, just before the Mariannhill Toll Plaza, and ploughed into a construction team working along the roadside.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Gareth Jamieson said emergency crews arrived shortly after 11:00 to find “carnage” on the scene.
According to Jamieson, the truck veered off the highway, struck the workers, and then crashed down an embankment.
The two men, believed to be in their twenties, sustained catastrophic injuries, The Witness reports.
“Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for them, and they were declared deceased on the scene,” Jamieson said.
The truck driver survived and sustained moderate injuries. He was treated on-site before being transported to the hospital.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma expressed condolences to the families of the workers.
“According to RTI, the accident happened on the N3 eastbound before the Mariannhill Toll Plaza. The truck driver allegedly approached the bend at high speed only to realise traffic had slowed due to toll congestion,” Duma said.
“In trying to avoid a collision, he swerved, lost control and went down the embankment. Sadly, he hit two gentlemen who were busy cutting the grass.”
Duma said the department would assist in making contact with the families and called on the trucking company to do the same.
He added that the department would work with SAPS as investigations continue.
