Two trains collide near Lebombo border in Mpumalanga

Little info is known about the collision between two trains in Mpumalanga, but no injuries or fatalities have yet been reported.

Transnet Freight Rail has confirmed a train collision that occurred on the mainline between Ressano Garcia in Mozambique and Komatipoort in South Africa on Tuesday.

According to a statement released by Transnet, the collision happened at 17:15.

In the statement, the company said a Transnet train, operated by a crew from Mozambique Ports and Railways (CFM), collided with a CFM train that was shunting on the mainline between Ressano Garcia and Komatipoort.

“CFM is a state-owned company that oversees the railway system in Mozambique and its connected ports,” reads the statement.

“The Transnet train, which had been loaded with magnetite, departed from Komatipoort and was destined for Ressano Garcia. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident.”

No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
