Update: 3 arrested after 2 headless bodies discovered near Middelburg
Authorities are investigating a gruesome double homicide in rural Mpumalanga.
Three Malawian nationals have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of two men whose bodies were found in a veld at rural Avontuur, near Middelburg in Mpumalanga yesterday.
Middelburg Observer reports that both victims were decapitated, and their feet and arms had also been hacked off.
The bodies were found close together in a veld, not far from a farmhouse where police discovered the primary crime scene.
Police followed a blood trail to the house, which they found locked.
Evidence at the scene suggests that both men were killed in the house.
The bodies also had bullet wounds, leading police to believe that they were mutilated after the men had been shot and killed.
One of the bodies was dumped facedown, while the other was facing upwards.
The motive of the attack is unknown.
Police arrested three Malawian nationals shortly after the macabre scene was discovered. They were all arrested on a nearby farm, close to the house where the investigation is focused.
The victims have not yet been named.
The trio is expected to appear in court on charges of murder on Monday.
