UPDATE: Girl, 5, ‘murdered’ by father identified

The little girl who was allegedly murdered last week by her father in the Aureus area of Randfontein, on the West Rand, has been identified as Keandre Louw, a pupil of Toekomsrus Primary School.

According to a neighbour, Fazil Bhana, the father was a heavy user of drugs, particularly Tik (methamphetamine), Randfontein Herald reported.

“Drugs and unemployment is the reason for crime in our community,” Bhana said.

Police took the 29-year-old father into custody following her death last Wednesday (June 10). He has since made an appearance in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court.

“Police were called out to a scene in Aureus, Randfontein, that day at approximately 9.40pm. Upon arrival, they were shown the body of a five-year-old victim,” said Randfontein police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst.

“The suspect was also on the scene and arrested. It is alleged the 5-year-old girl was murdered and that the suspect allegedly also tried to commit suicide,” Ernst added.

Louw’s funeral, which was sponsored by members of the Toekomsrus community, took place this morning. She is expected to be buried in the Toekomsrus Cemetery later in the day.
