Vehicle search in Ficksburg leads to seizure of rhino horns and gold

A man was arrested in Ficksburg after police found rhino horns, unpolished diamonds and gold during a vehicle search.

Members of the Ficksburg Visible Policing Unit conducted an operation in the early hours of yesterday morning, during which they stopped and searched a vehicle.

Bloemfontein Courant reports that Free State police spokesperson Thabo Covane confirmed that officers discovered a parcel wrapped in brown adhesive tape inside the boot of the vehicle.

“The 39-year-old driver was asked to account for the parcel and informed police that he had been requested to transport it from Johannesburg to Maseru,” Covane said.

Contraband uncovered

Upon unwrapping the parcel, police found four horns, believed to be from rhinos, a zip-lock plastic bag containing 50 suspected unpolished diamonds, and a solid piece of gold concealed in a plastic medicine container.

Arrest and court appearance

The foreign national male was immediately arrested and a case docket for possession of suspected rhino horns, unpolished diamonds and gold was opened at the Ficksburg Police Station.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
