Vehicle stolen on Election Day in Pretoria retrieved en route to Zimbabwe
A Toyota Fortuner that was stolen on Election Day was found before it could be smuggled out of the country.
A vehicle stolen during the seventh provincial and national elections in the north of Pretoria was retrieved en route to Zimbabwe.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba yesterday said a police task team under an anti-smuggling operation recovered the vehicle after it was stolen in Sinoville on May 29.
“The Provincial Anti-Smuggling Task team in Limpopo conducted a successful operation, intercepting a 36-year-old male suspect who was en route to Zimbabwe through the Beitbridge border post,” said Ledwaba.
Ledwaba said the suspect had been driving the stolen Toyota Fortuner from Gauteng and was apprehended on Thursday morning, in the Matlala policing area outside Polokwane.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was stolen on General Election Day (May 29) in Sinoville,” he said.
Ledwaba said the suspect will appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of a presumed stolen motor vehicle.
“The provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has welcomed the arrest and commended the collaboration between SAPS and private security to tackle these crimes effectively,” said Ledwaba.
He said police were still investigating the case further for other possible arrests.
