Video: African rock python escapes capture bag in KZN
A reptile handler faced an extended struggle after a snake slipped containment ahead of its transfer to the Nambiti Private Game Reserve.
An African rock python caught in a kraal near Colenso on Friday (November 6) gave its rescuers an unexpected surprise after escaping from its capture bag while awaiting transportation to Nambiti Private Game Reserve, reports the Northern Natal News.
The large snake was caught by local snake and bee handler Zam Paulik, who operates in the Ladysmith and Bergville areas of KZN.
Following its capture, the python was transported to Paulik’s home on the back of his bakkie, where it was placed in a specialised snake capture bag overnight in preparation for its journey to Nambiti Conservancy the following morning.
However, when Paulik went to retrieve the snake the next morning, he discovered that it had managed to escape from the bag.
The python had found its way out of the bag in the garage, after which it hid behind a set of heavy work benches.
What followed was an extended struggle to retrieve the sizeable reptile from its hiding place.
After considerable effort, Paulik eventually managed to recapture the snake and safely return it to its bag.
The unexpected escape provided a reminder of just how resourceful and powerful these impressive reptiles can be, even when temporarily contained.
The python was once again secured and ready for its planned relocation to Nambiti Conservancy.
