VIDEO: Armed suspects hit Engen garage

CCTV footage has emerged showing robbers storming into the Engen Garage next to Trade Route Mall in Lenasia, in the south of Johannesburg, yesterday.

In the video, captured at about 1am, a white Fiat bakkie can be seen pulling up next to the petrol pump and the driver instructing the petrol attendant to fill the bakkie with R300 petrol, Rising Sun Lenasia reported.

“While the attendant was filling the tank, a man exited the bakkie from the passenger door carrying a rifle and ran to the shop. Two petrol attendants and a motorist who had seen the man run into the shop scattered away in different directions,” said the petrol station manager, Hajra Khan.

One suspect is seen entering the shop. Fearing he might get locked inside the shop, he uses his hands to keep the door from closing, not realising the doors are automated. Finding it difficult to keep the doors from closing, his friend, the driver of the bakkie, assists him by standing between the two doors.

According to Khan, the cashier ran towards the kitchen and hid behind a wall as she saw the robber entering the door. The suspect spotted her and fired a shot, hitting a pie warmer. After the gunshot, she ran and hid inside the freezer, said Khan. The armed suspect went straight for the till, dropping the till drawer a few times. As the till fell, he took his time picking the money up from the floor, Khan added.

The robbers got into their vehicle and escaped the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries were reported and police investigations are ongoing.

In a separate incident, a 32-year-old suspect was arrested after a robbery at a petrol station in Berea, Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal.
