VIDEO: Man beats bogus police officer

Video footage has emerged showing a man beating a suspected bogus police officer in Linden, Johannesburg.

The footage shows Sundowner resident James Starkey struggling with the man, who claimed to be a police officer from Johannesburg Central.

Starkey had been driving down 1st Avenue in Linden at about 11am on Wednesday when a man in an unmarked vehicle stopped at the traffic light next to him.

The man, who was armed with a pistol and not wearing police uniform, produced a police badge and made Starkey pull over, Randburg Sun reported.

After looking at Starkey’s business card, the man told Starkey he could leave.

When Starkey asked for the man’s identification, he refused and tried to drive away.

Starkey pulled out the man’s car keys, believing him to be a fake police officer fishing for a bribe. An argument and a struggle then ensued. The man later drove off as Linden police officers arrived at the scene.

Linden police officer gave chase, but they could not catch the man.

A case of assault was opened at Linden police station, according to Captain Alex Vermaak.

“A police officer must always present his ID on the spot,” said Vermaak.

“If he claims to be police, then he must present his ID; if not then he is not a cop. We have a unique ID with a hologram that cannot be copied.”

Yesterday, an eyewitness captured video footage of bogus police officers attempting to hijack a motorist in Moreleta Park, in the east of Pretoria.

Investigations are ongoing.
