VIDEO: Man caught stealing tablet at school offices
A manhunt has been launched after a man was caught on CCTV footage stealing a tablet from the office of a Boston College employee in Kempton Park, on the East Rand.
The institution’s human resources officer opened a case of theft after her Samsung Galaxy tablet went missing from her handbag on May 13, Kempton Express reported.
“The victim said she had stepped out of her office during the afternoon, and when she came back at about 3.30pm, her tablet was missing from her handbag,” said Kempton Park police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali.
“It is not clear how the man gained entrance into the office, but it is alleged he and an accomplice arrived at the building together and pretended to be selling clothes. It is suspected his accomplice may have then distracted the receptionist while he went into the office,” added Mtshali.
The next day at about 9am, she received a phone call from a parent at the school who claimed someone had called him and said his child’s student file or card was found in Johannesburg.
The father was told he should collect the student card on Noord Street.
“It is suspected that the man in the video footage might have used the student’s file to hide the tablet and then later dumped the file in Joburg,” Mtshali said.
In the video, the man is seen entering the office and browsing around.

He first sits down at a table in the office and looks around. He then gets up and checks the rest of the office before heading to the door to leave.
Before exiting, he takes an envelope from the top of a cabinet by the door and then goes out.
A few moments later he returns, envelope in hand, and goes straight to the table he initially sat at. He then takes the gadget out of the bag, slips it in between the folder and walks out of the office.

Last month, two suspects were caught on camera stealing a Samsung computer screen from a shopping centre in Kempton Park, on the East Rand.
