Video: Paul Willemse slapped with hefty suspension

The Montpellier lock's tackle on Ulster's Will Addison was deemed reckless by an independent disciplinary hearing.

SA-born France lock Paul Willemse has received a lengthy ban for a dangerous hit in a Challenge Cup round of 16 clash between Montpellier and Ulster last week.

Willemse was red-carded by referee Ben Whitehouse for his tackle on Will Addison at the GGL Stadium. Following an independent disciplinary hearing the committee, led by chair Benjamin Rutherford, determined that Willemse’s actions were reckless.

Despite Willemse’s acceptance of the red card, the committee found his actions merited a six-week suspension, reduced to five weeks due to his guilty plea.

As Willemse is currently injured, the precise dates of his suspension will be communicated later. Both Willemse and EPCR retain the right to appeal the decision.
