Video: Policeman injured amid taxi violence in Margate

Warnings have been sound to avoid the KZN town as the situation remains tense.

A policeman was shot during a continuation of the taxi violence in Margate this morning.

It’s believed he was taken to hospital for treatment, but it’s not certain how badly injured he is at this stage.

Passengers and pedestrians have been warned to stay away from Margate as it is not safe.

Seaslopes road is closed.

Taxis have blocked the Masinenge intersection near the SPCA and also in Margate Extension 3, coming into Masinenge on the Seaslopes road.

According to a source known to the South Coast Herald, the situation is ‘tense’.

The violence broke out yesterday afternoon when a Gamalakhe taxi was attacked in Manaba.

Windows were smashed and the road had to be closed.

Police on the scene have refused to comment about the situation.

Police are present in the area.

Yesterday, three people, including a taxi driver, were injured, after gunshots were fired during a taxi violence incident, near the Hibiscus Mall.

These reports are still to be officially confirmed by SAPS.

Rudi Prinsloo of Mi7 told the newspaper that he had a hair-raising experience on the scene yesterday. While treating an injured person, he was approached by a large group of men and told to leave the patient.

He said the mob then continued to beat the injured man. Police, Wolf Security and ADT quickly intervened and Prinsloo was able to go back to the patient and carry on treating him.

“We can confirm that at least two people have been injured,” he said.

Prinsloo confirmed that one person was transported by Mi7 to hospital, and a seriously injured patient by Netcare 911.
