A video circulating on social media shows what appears to be a tornado that was spotted by motorists on the N11 near Utrecht in north-west KZN earlier this afternoon.

The tornado-like image captured on camera shortly after 13:00 caused chaos in the vicinity of Maskraal and Madadeni’s Section 7.

Charles Steyn of Magenta Medical Services says houses in the area have been damaged, with roofs reportedly ripped off.

He adds that injuries have been reported, but the severity of these is not yet known.

A media query whether this was indeed a tornado has been sent to the South African Weather Service, but no answer was received at the time of publishing.
