Video: Storm wreaks havoc in Msunduzi
Six family members had to be taken to hospital after corrugated iron collapsed on them when a fallen tree crushed their home.
A powerful storm swept through Msunduzi last night, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
Heavy rains and strong winds caused significant damage, including fallen trees and damaged infrastructure.
In response, Msunduzi Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla led a team to assess the damage and provide aid to affected residents.
By lunchtime, Thebolla was at Emadamini, KwaMachibisa in Pietermaritzburg, evaluating the damage caused by a tree that fell on two houses.
Ntombenhle McKenzie told The Witness that she was rushed to the hospital last night with five other family members after corrugated iron from the their house structure fell on them.
“I was outside when the tree fell only to realise that my son was still inside the house. I rushed back in and that’s when the roof fell on me,” said McKenzie.
Thebolla assured residents that the Red Cross, Gift of the Givers, and other stakeholders are on site, assessing the damage and providing essential supplies, including food and blankets.
“Our priority is the safety and well-being of our residents. We’re committed to providing necessary support during this challenging time,” Thebolla said.
Residents are advised to exercise caution as clean-up efforts begin. Disaster management teams are on standby to assist those in need and provide updates on the situation.
