Residents in Ikageng near Potchefstroom were left stunned on yesterday morning after a minibus taxi was trapped in a massive road cavity at the busy First Stop intersection in Lekhele Street, reports Potchefstroom Herald.

The incident unfolded at approximately 05:30, during peak commuting hours, when the taxi drove into a deep, unpaved trench that had been left exposed in the roadway.

The front half of the vehicle was almost entirely submerged in the excavation, creating an unusual scene that quickly drew the attention of nearby residents and commuters.

Heavy machinery, including a large yellow excavator, was deployed later in the morning to the scene to stabilise the surrounding ground and assist in recovering the trapped vehicle. The operation caused significant disruption, with lanes blocked off and traffic building up along the route as motorists attempted to navigate around the obstruction.

Despite the severity of the incident and the extensive damage to the vehicle, no serious injuries had been reported. The condition of those involved has not been confirmed.

The incident has reignited concerns among Ikageng residents on social media about safety at local construction sites, particularly the apparent lack of adequate warning signage and protective measures around excavations.

Authorities have also called on drivers to exercise heightened caution in construction zones, warning that road conditions across parts of the township remain unpredictable following recent maintenance work.
