VIDEO: Violent protest actions spread to Mamelodi
Several malls, shopping centres and businesses in Pretoria remain closed on Tuesday as preventive measures.
A violent mob looted the Mamelodi Mall before setting it alight on Monday evening.
Mamelodi East CPF chairperson Eddie Mnguni on Tuesday morning said the looting started just after 19:00 on Monday evening.
“Throughout the day [Monday], the situation was under control; however, after 07:00, we were informed that the mall was on fire. When police and other law enforcement agencies arrived, they found that the mall was looted and vandalised,” he said.
Mnguni said that the mob also looted Denlyn shopping centre and the Mahube mall.
“Liquor stores and the KFC outside Denlyn have been torched. The situation got out of hand quickly last night,” he said.
No injuries have been reported so far.
Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili said more info about the Gauteng protests will be provided after 10:00 [on Tuesday].
Meanwhile, several malls and shopping centres in Pretoria remain closed on Tuesday as precautionary measures.
Nothing has yet been reported in any of the other areas of Pretoria.
