Videos: Taxi crash claims 7 lives in Johannesburg South

Seven people died and nine were critically injured after a taxi crash on Comaro Street in Bassonia early this morning.

A devastating taxi crash on Comaro Street in Bassonia, Johannesburg South, early this morning has left seven people dead and nine critically injured, prompting a large-scale emergency response.

Comaro Chronicle reports the crash occurred shortly after 08:00, when emergency services were called to the scene following reports of a serious collision involving a taxi.

Emergency services respond

First responders from ER24 Johannesburg South were the first to arrive, quickly calling for additional assistance upon assessing the severity of the situation.

“When we arrived on scene, we found multiple patients trapped inside the vehicle. The Jaws of Life had to be used to free the occupants, with the assistance of Fidelity Secure Fire and City of Johannesburg Firefighters,” says Faheem Essop, the branch manager for ER24 Joburg South.

A total of nine patients were transported in critical condition to various hospitals across the Johannesburg South area. Tragically, seven of them died.

Ongoing rescue and investigation

Rescue operations remain ongoing as authorities work to free others who are still trapped in the wreckage. The SAPS, JMPD and other traffic officials are currently investigating the cause of the crash.

Comaro Street has been closed to traffic while emergency and law enforcement personnel continue their work at the scene.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes until further notice.
