Watch: Baboon roams Secunda streets

Residents are urged to stay clear as wildlife rescue tracks a large male baboon for safe capture and relocation.

A large male baboon spotted in Secunda yesterday afternoon is on the move again. The animal was seen in Kleynhans Street at 07:20 this morning, possibly heading towards a nearby bushy area.

Ridge Times reports a resident’s home security camera captured him moving through the yard.

Marius van Reeuwyk, the chief animal welfare inspector at the South African Animal Welfare Inspectorate Association, urges residents not to try to catch, shoot or provoke the animal.

“Stay away and leave the animal alone,” adds Van Reeuwyk.

Keep pets safe

Tanja Ackermann of Secunda Wildlife Rescue says residents should keep their small dogs inside while the team tracks the baboon’s movements.

The rescuers aim to keep the baboon calm and safe. Residents in the area of Kleynhans Street are asked to send a clear photo or video with the exact location and time last seen to Ackermann or Van Reeuwyk.

“Please do not chase this baboon, do not feed it. When we can see he stays in an area, we can get someone to bring a cage with food and sedatives so we can safely capture and relocate him,” says Ackermann.

Ackermann and Van Reeuwyk can be contacted at 082 057 9157 or 067 858 9719 respectively.
