Watch: Brazen attack on couple in Plettenberg Bay

A couple was rushed to hospital after being attacked while walking down the street.

An attack on a couple taking a stroll in Challenge Drive in Plettenberg Bay was captured on CCTV early yesterday morning when a mugger grabbed the woman’s handbag.

According to an article published by Knysna-Plett Herald, the video that has been circulated widely on social media shows that when the couple fought back, the mugger became aggressive, hitting them and pushing them to the ground.

In the video, it looks as if the attacker only makes off with two hats before fleeing the scene.

Otto Olivier, operations manager of the Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association, says a R10 000 reward is being offered for information.

Olivier says within minutes of the attack, people came to the distraught and injured couple’s aid and they were rushed to Medi Clinic in a private vehicle.

“Various responders flooded the area, and a search was conducted of the area and escape routes,” says Olivier.

He says SAPS are investigating the incident and Plettenberg Bay’s new station commander visited the victims and the scene and made all possible police resources available to apprehend the culprit.

“The victims are traumatised and receiving the care they need. We wish them a speedy recovery.”

Olivier says Plettenberg Bay is one of the safest residential and holiday destinations in South Africa, but people should always stay alert.

“Our peaceful and tranquil residential areas provoke us to let our guard down, even though the reality of people with criminal intent might be lurking around.

“Please stay vigilant, especially older residents. Arm yourself with pepper spray when taking a stroll or going shopping,” says Olivier.

Knysna-Plett Herald is awaiting more information from the police.
