Watch: Ceiling collapse at Randburg mall sparks online panic amid severe weather warning
A ceiling collapse at Northgate Mall caused brief concern, while a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Gauteng.
A small section of the ceiling collapsed at Northgate Mall in Randburg yesterday, prompting concern after videos of the incident began circulating on social media.
Randburg Sun reports the incident occurred along the internal walkway between Entrance 2 and Pick n Pay, near Value Co. According to a representative at the mall, only a limited area was affected.
“No injuries were recorded,” the representative said. “We closed off the part of the walkway where the ceiling collapsed and cleaned the area. Value Co was not affected, and the rest of the mall remains open.”
Despite claims on social media suggesting the entire shopping centre had collapsed, this was not the case. The damage was confined to a small section of the ceiling and shoppers were able to continue using other parts of the mall as normal.

In a message issued to the public, the Gauteng Joint Operations Committee said: “Such conditions could result in flooding, damage to structures and disruptions of services. Please be alert and take necessary precautions.”
