Small ceiling collapse reported at Northgate Mall

A small section of the ceiling collapsed at Northgate Mall on December 27. No injuries were reported, and only a limited internal walkway area was temporarily closed off.

A small section of the ceiling collapsed at Northgate Mall on December 27, causing concern after videos began circulating online.

The incident happened along the internal walkway between Entrance 2 and Pick n Pay, near Value Co. According to a representative at the mall, only a limited area was affected.

“No injuries were recorded,” the representative said. “We closed off the part of the walkway where the ceiling collapsed and cleaned the area. Value Co was not affected, and the rest of the mall remains open.”

Despite claims on social media suggesting the entire shopping centre had collapsed, this was not the case. The damage was confined to a small section of the ceiling, and shoppers were able to continue using other parts of the mall as normal.

Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued a Level 4 warning for the possibility of severe thunderstorms across Gauteng.

According to the warning, such conditions could result in flooding, damage to structures and disruptions to services. Residents are urged to remain alert and take the necessary precautions.

In a message issued to the public, the Gauteng Provincial JOC said,
