Watch: Durban school mass brawl leaves 3 hospitalised
A violent clash at Centenary Secondary School left at least three learners injured, forcing the school to close as authorities investigate.
A violent mass brawl erupted at Centenary Secondary School in Asherville, Durban, this morning, leaving at least three learners injured and forcing the school to shut down for the day.
Rising Sun reports that, according to DRK Security, the fight broke out just before 09:00, prompting an urgent response from police and private security companies.
“Police and numerous security companies responded and had their hands full trying to contain the situation. A decision was made by the school principal to close the school, and parents were informed to collect their children. It is believed that the mass fighting was racially motivated. However, authorities will be investigating and monitoring the situation further,” says the security company.
SAPS Public Order Policing units were deployed to restore order, while school officials worked to manage the situation.
A video circulating on social media shows a large group of learners fighting outside the school grounds, with some being forcefully restrained.
Emergency medical teams treated several learners at the scene, with three transported to hospital for further care. Their injuries and current conditions remain unknown.
Authorities have confirmed they will be monitoring the school closely in the coming days to prevent further violence.
