Watch: Fire destroys container classrooms at Midrand school

Teaching was disrupted at Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School after a fire, allegedly caused by unattended gas tanks, damaged classrooms and left some injured.

Teaching and learning were disrupted at Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School in Midrand, yesterday.

Midrand Reporter reports this comes after some container classrooms caught fire, allegedly starting from unattended gas tanks.

According to one parent, who did not want to be named, some learners and a teacher were injured in the process.

The extent of their injuries is unknown at the moment.

The parent says: “I received a call while I was at home about fire at the school around 07:00. When I got there, learners were outside while community members tried to stop the blaze with water buckets.”

Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona adds: “The school community intervened and called the firefighters to extinguish the fire and they managed to contain the blaze.” Mabona says that while the school day was able to continue as normal, ‘three Grade R classrooms were affected by the fire’.

The department’s psychosocial support team will be sent to the school to provide necessary assistance.
