Watch: Fire destroys container classrooms at Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary
A parent at the school said that some learners and teachers were injured.
Teaching and learning were disrupted at Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School today (26 February).
This is after some container classrooms caught fire, allegedly starting from unattended gas tanks.

According to one parent, who did not want to be named said some learners and a teacher were injured in the process.
The extent of their injuries are unknown at the moment.
The parent said, “I received a call while I was at home about fire at the school around 07:00. When I got there, learners were outside while community members tried to stop the blaze with water buckets”.

According to the Department of Education’s (GDE) spokesperson Steve Mabona, “The school community intervened and called the firefighters to extinguish the fire and they managed to contain the blaze”. Mabona added that while the school day was able to continue as normal, “three Grade R classrooms were affected by the fire.”

The GDE’s Psycho-Social Support team will be sent to the school to provide necessary assistance.
