Watch: Hijackers crash stolen vehicle after being shot in KZN

A group of armed men attempted to hijacking a SUV, but failed after a bystander fired shots at them - injuring one.

The attempted hijacking of a Toyota Fortuner resulted in shots being fired and a hijacker being injured.

These scenes played out at the Kingsway and Nelson Palmer roads intersection at Warner Beach in KZN at around 16:00 on Saturday.

CCTV footage shows the driver of a Toyota Fortuner parking the SUV on a driveway. A group of armed robbers can then be seen climbing out of a Mercedes-Benz and forcing the occupants of the SUV out of the vehicle.

The getaway driver in the Mercedes-Benz drives away from the scene, but remains close by. As the hijackers reverse the now stolen SUV out of the driveway, a bystander fires shots at the group.

The SUV comes to a halt for a moment and one of the hijackers then climbs out as he flees towards the getaway car. The SUV then drives off into a hill and the hijacker, who climbed into the driver’s seat, can be seen falling out of the vehicle.

The visibly injured robber then crawls towards the getaway car and the group then flees the scene.

“Armed [individuals] attempted to hijack a Toyota Fortuna. Shots were fired and one person was injured. The suspects crashed the Fortuna and fled,” a statement from the Community Crime Prevention Community Amanzimtoti explains.
