Watch: Jamaica faces devastation as Hurricane Melissa roars in

With a third of the island already in darkness, Jamaica now confronts the full force of Hurricane Melissa’s arrival.

The Caribbean, and especially Jamaica, are currently under siege as Hurricane Melissa, one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the region, has made landfall on the island.

Lives lost before landfall

According to CNN, seven people died before Melissa even reached Jamaica’s coastline. Three of the deaths were confirmed on the island. They reportedly died while preparing for the hurricane by cutting down trees.

At 18:00 this evening, the news network reported winds in excess of 290 km/h as the storm barrelled closer, with officials expecting landfall within hours.

A nation plunged into darkness

The BBC later confirmed that the hurricane struck south-western Jamaica as a Category 5 storm. Energy Minister Daryl Vaz announced that roughly a third of the country has already been left without power.

A BBC correspondent on the ground said residents are relying on satellite phones to communicate.

Rescue efforts prepared

Emergency authorities are bracing for a difficult aftermath. The deputy chairman of Jamaica’s Disaster Risk Management Council told reporters that the country’s military and fire brigade are prepared to begin search-and-rescue operations once it is safe to do so.

ABC News reported that rescue teams have been strategically positioned and will be deployed as soon as Hurricane Melissa moves across the island.
