Watch: Lowveld horticulturist earns top honours at Chelsea Flower Show

A striking display inspired by wildfire recovery earned South Africa gold at one of the world’s most prestigious flower shows.

The well-known green thumb of the Lowveld, Leon Kluge, and his team bagged yet another gold at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London and won the title Best on Show today (May 19).

Lowvelder reports that the team showcased a unique display of SA’s finest fauna and flora in their ‘Life After Fire’ exhibit. Kluge shared the exciting news in a Facebook video.

“It’s gold for South Africa at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show! Thank you for all the support back home, I want to thank my hard-working and passionate team for putting this together.”

Life after fire

He explained that the display showcases the importance of maintaining SA’s flora after devastating wildfires tore through the Cape over the past year. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Kluge admitted it was a difficult two weeks and described the process of putting the stand together as a ‘roller coaster’, but despite the challenges, the team rose to the top and will bring home the gold medal.
