Kaapsehoop, Mpumalanga, residents are overjoyed to welcome a new foal, Phoenix, to the area’s wild horse herd.

Lowvelder reports that Phoenix was born on Tuesday.

The spokesperson of the Kaapsehoop Wild Horse Fund subcommittee, Andrea Fourie, shared photos and confirmed the news on their Facebook page.

“Welcome little one, we hereby baptise you Phoenix, because you are a timeless symbol of survival.”

The newborn is an offspring of one of the stallions, Dennis, that was allegedly poached with three other horses on September 7.

“We are rejoicing that the strong genes of our deceased stallion are visibly present in his son,” Fourie said.

The mare who bore him is also known as the af-oor mare since she lost her ear due to an old injury after a tick infestation.

Fourie also shared that it is foaling season and that they expect more foals to be born during this time.

This is good news as, in April, it was reported that Kaapsehoop’s wild horse numbers are plummeting amid disease, road deaths and fire.
