Watch: Parties reject Ekurhuleni budget as council seeks legal clarity
Ekurhuleni’s budget vote collapsed after parties rejected the process, with legal concerns raised over voting requirements.
The City of Ekurhuleni’s 2026/27 budget was not adopted during a council sitting yesterday (May 28) after disagreements over the voting process led to the meeting collapsing.
Kempton Express reports that during debate proceedings, the EFF, DA, ActionSA and ACDP rejected the proposed budget.
When voting proceedings started, EFF caucus leader Thembi Msane raised concerns over the process followed during the previous budget vote, arguing that it was not legally correct.
Msane told Speaker of Council Clr John Senona that legislation requires at least 113 councillors to support the budget for it to pass.
Calls for legal clarity
The ANC and its Super Seven coalition partners then requested a meeting, arguing that council standing orders and legislative requirements needed to be properly considered during the voting process.
The sitting later collapsed after Senona indicated that he needed to seek legal advice on the matter before proceedings could continue.
Budget adoption remains unresolved
At the time of publication, the budget had not been adopted and it remained unclear when council would reconvene to continue deliberations.
