WATCH: Reckless KZN joyride driver ploughs into learners

Several Fairvale Secondary School learners were injured after a reckless driver ploughed into them, outside the school on Retreat Road in Wentworth, KZN on Wednesday afternoon, 30 September.

Video footage, which went viral on social media, shows the driver of a Toyota Corolla driving recklessly back and forth on the road until he loses control and drives over the roadside into a group of learners, Southlands Sun reports.

Wentworth SAPS confirmed that four teenage learners, three boys and one girl, were injured in the accident. They were taken to Wentworth Hospital for medical treatment.

“Police were assisted by members of the community to apprehend the two occupants who had run away to evade arrest. The two, aged, 21 and 23, were arrested on charges of possession of stolen property, reckless and negligent driving, failing to produce a driver’s license, and failing to report injuries after an accident. The vehicle was also unregistered and unroadworthy,” said Wentworth police spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede.

He added that the vehicle was also positive in a case of motor vehicle theft in Amanzimtoti.

“The suspects are originally residents from KwaMakhutha. Police have impounded the vehicle and the case will be investigated thoroughly to make sure the suspects are dealt with accordingly,” said Gumede.
