Watch: Rubber bullets fired at miners, nearly 3 weeks after Springs ‘hostage’ drama

The situation at Gold One mine in Springs remains tense amid ongoing protest action from miners who want to be represented by a different union.

Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) striking miners were on the receiving end of rubber bullets and tear gas this morning, for picketing outside the Gold One Mine in Springs, Ekurhuleni, ahead of their disciplinary hearings planned for today.

Forty-five miners were suspended for organising an underground ‘sit-in’ at the mine in October. In early November, they were reportedly barred from entering the mine.

Miners also picketed outside the mine’s entrance last week, in support of those who had been suspended.

At the time, the head of legal at Gold One Modder East, Ziyaad Hassan, said the disciplinary hearings would start this week.

This is a developing story.
