WATCH: Truck drivers protest in Richards Bay over foreigners in industry

Trucks were halted as the truck drivers picketed in the city, demanding the same treatment for both local and foreign drivers.

The All Truck Drivers Forum (ATDF) and Allied South Africa (ASA) in Richards Bay earlier today halted all trucks and picketed at the Alton intersection on the John Ross.

Detailing the cause of the action, ATDFSA’s Richards Bay chairperson Manqoba Shozi said their protest action began on Sunday, and today they submitted a list of demands to the bargaining council.

“Our demands include cameras in trucks, hiring of foreigners, and grace periods,” said Shozi.

He vowed that, should their demands not be met, they will continue withholding services as they are the ones who deliver petrol and other goods.

Adding to the point was ATDFSA’s organiser Zenzele Magwaza who is adamant employers are colluding with foreigners.

“What frustrates us is that employers are dining at the table with foreign nationals working in the trucking industry without a licence and PDP like us South African drivers,” said Magwaza.

SANDF members and the Saps were on scene, closely monitoring the situation.
