Watch: Video allegedly shows deadly Ormonde cash-in-transit robbery
CCTV footage has surfaced which purportedly shows last week’s brazen cash-in-transit robbery in Johannesburg, in which two men were killed.
The Comaro Chronicle has obtained CCTV footage, allegedly of the moments leading up to and during a deadly cash-in-transit robbery in Ormonde on Thursday.
According to the Comaro Chronicle, the incident, which occurred at 12:23 on Crownwood Road, claimed the lives of two men and has raised serious concerns about the level of violence involved in such crimes.
Footage shows brazen attack
In the footage, multiple gunmen carrying high-calibre rifles are seen approaching a bakkie before opening fire.
The robbers appear to repeatedly shoot at the vehicle in a sustained attack.
Amid the chaos, a white bulletproof Toyota Fortuner is seen speeding into the scene, attempting to assist or rescue the victims. During the confrontation, the vehicle appears to strike one of the robbers, who is seen lying in the street.
Despite this, the remaining gunmen continue firing.
A second vehicle, believed to be a Porsche, is seen following the Fortuner. It passes the scene as the Fortuner attempts to make a U-turn. Gunfire continues as the Fortuner tries to return, but it appears to be forced away under heavy fire.
Multiple vehicles involved
The footage further shows a Mercedes-Benz hatchback arriving at the scene, with additional armed men exiting the vehicle and joining the attack.
The Fortuner then appears to pursue the Mercedes-Benz, allegedly dragging an injured robber along the road towards Rente Street, where it eventually comes to a stop against the pavement.
Shortly thereafter, the Porsche and Mercedes-Benz are seen returning to the scene, where the robbers regroup before fleeing. The group appears to clear the area before making their escape.
Victims identified, investigation ongoing
Although not yet verified by SAPS, the footage is believed to be of an incident of a cash-in-transit robbery involving a convoy transporting a large sum of money.
Two men, Shaheed Abdul Hamid Moosa and Hafidh Yusuf Modan, were killed during the attack. Police have not released further personal details, citing the ongoing investigation and the need to protect the families.
It is believed the victims were escorting the cash consignment when they were ambushed by suspects travelling in multiple high-end vehicles, including a BMW 1 Series and a Porsche.
The ambush reportedly began on the M1 highway, leading to a high-speed chase before the vehicles exited and stopped on Crownwood Road, where the fatal shooting took place.
During the confrontation, one security guard was seriously injured. Reports indicate that one suspect was killed and another wounded. The remaining suspects fled the scene with bags of money.
Police appeal for patience
The Comaro Chronicle contacted SAPS to verify the authenticity of the footage.
“We are still confirming each detail as we investigate. At this stage, no arrests have been made. We are urging patience as we look for the suspects involved,” said Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
Police investigations are ongoing.
