Watch: Video raises questions about Western Cape traffic officers’ conduct

A case was opened after a video showing an altercation with traffic officers near Mossel Bay went viral, but details remain unclear.

A case has been opened at Da Gamaskop Police Station, Mossel Bay, following an altercation with traffic officers that was caught on camera and shared on social media.

Mossel Bay Advertiser reports the video shows two provincial traffic officers appearing to attempt to arrest a man, who is then pulled to the ground by one of the officers.

The footage is believed to have been taken on the N2 near the Langeberg Mall off-ramp to Mossel Bay yesterday.

At this stage, it is unclear what case has been opened or if anyone has been arrested.

According to a comment posted on social media, about the video, the man is a bus driver who was speeding past cars waiting in the yellow line. “He tried to push in between all the cars in the line. Traffic cops spotted him and stopped him. He was very arrogant with the cops,” the comment states. The information contained in this comment could, however, not be verified at the time of publishing.

Other comments suggest the officer’s force was ‘needed’, alleging that if the man did not want to comply, he should ‘face the music’.

Another person was opposed to the officer’s takedown, adding: “These police officers are taking law into [their] own hands. They need a lesson to be learnt.”

Police and provincial traffic in Mossel Bay have been asked for comment, but none was received at the time of publishing.
