Watch: Police officers linked to Joburg assault identified, victims traced

A video circulating on social media, showing police officers attacking victims on the N1 highway in Johannesburg, sparked an investigation.

What are believed to be VIP protection police can be seen attacking the driver and passengers of a Ladysmith-registered car in a video that has been circulating on social media.

Police have confirmed that all officers linked to the attack have been identified.

At this stage it can be confirmed that the people in the vehicle are from Ladysmith and that the attack occurred on the N1 near Sunninghill, Johannesburg.

The police officers can be seen dragging and beating the occupants. Several of the officers kicked the helpless people while they were on the ground.

Police statement:

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says the SAPS have since successfully traced the victims of this incident.

“The process to obtain their statements continues as part of the probe. The police officers involved have also been identified and will be subjected to internal processes. Management of the SAPS views this as serious and will get to the bottom of this incident,” says Mathe.
